Blockchain tops list of fastest growing freelance skills for second time

Blockchain skills continue to be highly sought after, with Upwork’s latest quarterly skills index revealing the growing sector to be number one for the second time.

The index looks at the most desired skills for freelancers on its platform, and blockchain’s win against 5,000 other listed skills demonstrates its quickly expanding position in the workforce.

Upwork wrote: “Fortune 500 companies continue to incorporate blockchain into existing infrastructure. Blockchain topped the list as the fastest-growing skill in Q2 out of more than 5,000 on for the second consecutive quarter. Its year-over-year growth has exceeded 2,000 per cent for the past four quarters, and it experienced more than 3,500 per cent year-over-year growth in Q2.”

Go development, a programming language that can be used to create blockchain, also appeared on the list at number 10.

“Blockchain shows huge potential for businesses, causing a spike in demand for experts familiar with the technology,” Upwork continued. “A recent Deloitte survey found that 74 per cent of all respondents said their organisations see a ‘compelling business case’ for the use of blockchain.”

We previously reported that Bitcoin had topped the list of the fasted-growing skills in Q4 2017.

Stephane Kasriel, CEO of Upwork, said in February when the result was announced: “Not only does research show that the independent workforce is growing but we’re also seeing an increase in large-scale use of freelance talent by Fortune 500 companies.

“As new skills emerge and old ones evolve, businesses are becoming reliant on freelance specialists who proactively upgrade their skills and can provide the expertise they need, when they need it.”
